How Should You Respond To Sexual Advances?
Written by Hope on 13/12/2016

Love is kind and patient, never jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love isn’t selfish or quick-tempered. Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting.

I Corinthians 13:4-7

If a woman experiences sexual harassment or assault, it can become a harmful and enduring burden for her. It is one of the cruelest symptoms of this fallen world. How should you respond when someone approaches you for improper sexual involvement?

1. Do You Welcome Sexual Advances?

Are you pleased when a man presents sexual advances? Are you tempted to return his attention? Remember, the Lord knows your heart, and “God’s Spirit gives us love and self-control” (II Timothy 1:7). Do not give in to temptation or pressure to be sexually available. Your are made in God’s image and meant for His glory: “you are God’s temple and His Spirit lives in you” (I Corinthians 3:16).

2. Unwelcomed Sexual Advances

Sometimes, it might seem easier to agree when a man makes sexual advances towards you. Maybe you are afraid of the shame that a man focusing on your body as an object of sexual desire can bring. Know that the shame belongs to the person making the indecent proposal. Do not doubt your right or ability to reject it: “don’t be afraid. I am with you. I will make you strong, as I protect you” (Isaiah 41:10). A man who insults or attacks you is sinning. You can “be firm in your faith. Stay brave and strong” (I Corinthians 16:13).

3. Be Strong In The Lord

You are God’s wonderful creation, with a high calling and purpose! (1 Corinthians 6:13) Even if you have fallen before, remember Jesus’ words: “I didn’t come to invite good people to be my followers. I came to invite sinners.” (Mark 2:17) The woman at the well was one of these. She had not found satisfaction in many ungodly relationships (John 4:18). Jesus sought her out (John 4:4, 32-24) and invited her to turn from sin and find eternal life in Him.

If you also have done this but have repented, God accepts you. So what right does anyone have to come against you? Be bold in protecting your body as a temple of God: say no to harassment and repel sexual advances; ask for help from others if you need it (and if it is safe to do so).

Remember that God loves you and wants the best for you and all His children. You can pray that He will bring you a good, loving, patient husband – someone who will not force or torment you (or any other woman) into sexual involvement. What father does not want his daughter to be safe and pure? If you have trusted Christ, God is your loving father, and He has claimed you as His own child ( I John 3:1-3).

Pray this week:

That God will keep you and other women safe from sexual temptation, harassment, and assault.
