When There Are No Words
How do we deal with unspeakable pain?
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
God’s Word tells us that His ways are not our ways, neither are our thoughts His thoughts. To draw close to Him, we must immerse ourselves in His Word and seek His answers through prayer.
However, the difficulty comes when the answer doesn’t make sense, or the unthinkable happens. At this time when the whys don’t have answers, and the heart can’t make sense of the circumstances, we tend to question God as human beings. When our hearts can’t grasp the pain and suffering we are experiencing, we often want someone to blame or an answer to our why. We think if we can just make sense of things, we can heal or gain closure.
We may even find ourselves angry with God or bargaining with Him.
Scriptures tell us in Isaiah 53:6 that we all, like sheep, have gone astray; each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Unfortunately, because man has free will, he doesn’t always choose to do the right thing, and that causes pain. In our wrongdoings, we can hurt ourselves and one another. As sheep, we wander off the right path and even get lost. And when tragedy strikes, it can knock us off course. When the whys don’t have answers, and the heart can’t make sense of our situation, we have to rely on who our Shepherd is.
In His mercy and love for us, God provided Christ as payment for all our wrongdoings. His death and resurrection paid the price for every single wrong thing everyone has done or will ever do.
By accepting God’s gift of eternal life, believing in Him, asking His forgiveness, and embracing what His Son, Jesus did for us, we will be with Christ in eternity. If God sacrificed His own Son so that we could have eternal life, then how much must He love us and understand our suffering?
So, when life doesn’t make sense, and we don’t know why something has happened, and we can’t understand why God didn’t intervene or answer our prayers differently, we must rely on what we know about Him.
Genesis 1:1 teaches that God is Elohim, the strong One. And in Him, 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here. Therefore, we are new creations in Christ."
In Exodus 4:10,13, we learn another of God’s names, Adonai- which indicates first his title as Master or Lord, a name too sacred to be uttered. Yet, even though He is sacred, we are chosen, holy and dearly loved in Him. Colossians 3:12 says, "Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."
In Genesis 17:1, we learn that God is also El Shaddai, the Almighty God- and my Lord, we are His heirs, His sons or daughters. Galatians. 4:6,7 says, Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,[a] Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Scripture also tells us that God is El Olam or everlasting God, El Elyon- Most High, the God of heaven and earth, the strongest One, found in Genesis 14:20, and El Roi, which means the strong one who sees me as in Gen 16:13.
Ultimately, God is our Shepherd. We are the sheep of His pasture and therefore have everything we need to abide in Him. (Psalm 23 and 100) He is Yahweh, the eternal, self-existent God. (Exodus 3:13,14).
Therefore, since faith is the basis of our relationship with Christ, He desires our trust and love and wants it even when we don’t see the outcome. When life is hard, we can trust God because we know Him.
Pray this week:
Heavenly Father, please help me remember who You are so that I can rest in trust with You during my heart-breaking circumstances.
